TMR International Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, is facing criticism after refusing to release the body of 12-year-old Augustine Kizito, a Primary Seven pupil at Greenhill School (Buwate) who died on November 12, 2025, due to complications arising from injuries sustained in a suspected suicide incident at school.

Augustine reportedly fell from the second floor of a classroom block on October 22, 2025, and was immediately rushed to TMR Hospital Naalya, where he was placed in intensive care.

Despite weeks of treatment, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family and school community in mourning.

The hospital is demanding that the family pays at least half of the 150 million Ugandan shilling medical bill before releasing the body, stalling the family’s burial plans in Mukono District.

The school is leading community fundraising efforts to raise the required amount, with some parents mobilizing support to help the grieving family manage outstanding medical and funeral expenses.

According to reports, Augustine’s family had already spent over UGX 100 million on medical care, and his father, DP/NUP stalwart Kenneth Kakande, is now facing a challenging situation.

Legal experts have weighed in on the matter, citing Ugandan court rulings and laws, including a 2020 health facilities charter, which prohibits hospitals from detaining deceased bodies over unpaid fees, deeming it unlawful detention.

The Uganda Medical Association and human rights organizations are expected to comment on the matter, emphasizing the need for hospitals to respect the rights of patients and their families during times of grief.

Greenhill School has expressed its condolences to the family and deployed counsellors to support learners and teachers affected by the incident.

The school has also cooperated with ongoing investigations into the matter, with messages circulating among parents alleging that Augustine had previously expressed distress over boarding life.
