The appointment, announced by the university’s council, marks a significant milestone in the institution’s history and a major step forward for gender equality in higher education.

Professor Byakika, a renowned academic and researcher, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since 2019.

“I am honored and humbled by this appointment,” said Professor Byakika.

“I am committed to building on the university’s strengths and working with all stakeholders to drive excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement.”

Under her leadership, MUST aims to enhance its research output, improve student experience, and foster partnerships with industry and community organizations.

The appointment has been widely welcomed by the academic community, with many hailing it as a triumph for women in leadership.

“Professor Byakika’s appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership and academic credentials,” said the university’s Chancellor, Professor Peter Mugyenyi.

“We look forward to her visionary leadership and commitment to excellence.”

Professor Byakika assumes office on August 1, 2024, and will serve a four-year term.
