Kampala, Uganda – In a move aimed at minimizing disruptions to economic activities, the government has extended the validity of approximately 15.8 million National Identification Cards set to expire between August 2024 and December 2025 by an additional year.
David Muhoozi, Minister of State for Internal Affairs, made the announcement while appearing before Parliament’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee.
He was updating the committee on the progress of the mass enrollment, renewal, and registration of new National IDs by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
The extension is intended to prevent potential disruptions to businesses and individuals, ensuring continuity and stability in the country’s economic and social sectors.
This development comes as NIRA prepares to roll out a new mass enrollment and renewal exercise, aimed at updating the national identity register and issuing new cards to citizens.
