Kampala, Uganda – General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Uganda Defence Forces (CDF) and Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has come out in strong support of Michael Mawanda, the Chairperson of the PLU’s Disciplinary Committee, who was recently detained by authorities over corruption allegations.
On his X handle, Gen Kainerugaba denounced Mawanda’s arrest, calling him a “political prisoner” and accusing officials from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party of orchestrating his detention.
According to Gen Kainerugaba, Mawanda’s only “crime” was supporting him in Bushenyi.
“My friend, Michael Mawanda, is in prison (and they think we shall stay quiet forever) while people who have stolen from this country for decades are still Ministers??
Mzee should hear our cry for change,” Gen Kainerugaba tweeted, highlighting the perceived double standards in the treatment of Mawanda compared to other officials accused of corruption.
The CDF’s statement has sparked speculation about the growing rift within the NRM party and the increasing influence of the PLU, which is seen as a potential launchpad for Gen Kainerugaba’s presidential ambitions.
Mawanda’s detention has been linked to corruption allegations, but Gen Kainerugaba’s intervention suggests that the case may be more politically motivated than initially thought.
