Kampala, Uganda – In a significant development for Ugandan football, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced that the Uganda Premier League (UPL) will revert to its traditional format for the current season. This decision comes after a series of meetings and discussions between FUFA, UPL clubs, and other stakeholders.
FUFA President Hon. Moses Magogo revealed that the decision to revert to the old format was made in response to concerns raised by clubs and other stakeholders.
“As FUFA, we have listened to the clubs and other stakeholders and agreed that we revert to the old format for this season,” Magogo said. “We will go back and make more reviews, further consultations, and we will get back to it next season.”
The decision to suspend the new format was made by the FUFA Executive Committee after consultations with UPL clubs, league sponsors, and the Uganda Premier League Board.
According to FUFA, the suspension will allow stakeholders more time to understand the new UPL reforms through various forms of sensitization.
It’s worth noting that the new format, which was introduced at the start of the season, had faced criticism from several top-flight clubs.
The format featured a three-round league system, with the top six teams competing in a final round to determine the champion.
While the format has been suspended, other reforms introduced at the start of the season will continue to be reviewed.
FUFA has assured stakeholders that the league will continue to benefit from ongoing reforms aimed at improving the competitiveness and sustainability of Ugandan football.
