Kampala, Uganda – Herbert Anderson Burora, the former Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Rubaga Division, has been released on bail after spending over a month in prison.
The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court granted Burora a non-cash bail of Ugx5m, with a critical condition: he must not speak publicly about Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among.
Burora faces six counts of hate speech and spreading malicious information aimed at demeaning Speaker Among.
The prosecution alleges that between March and June 2024, Burora used his Twitter handle ‘@HarderHB’ to share false information portraying Among as a “torturer, murderer, kidnapper, and extremely corrupt.”
Burora’s troubles began in March when he started posting about alleged corruption in parliament, specifically targeting Speaker Among.
He was suspended from office on March 14, 2024, and later chose to resign on March 18, 2024, citing the need to protect his conscience.
The case has sparked concerns about freedom of speech and the limits of criticism towards public figures in Uganda.
Burora’s next court appearance is scheduled for a later date, where he will face the charges against him.
