The leadership of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga faction took a bold step on Monday 23-09-2024, storming the Electoral Commission (EC) offices to demand registration forms for their new party, the People’s Front for Freedom.
This move follows the EC’s delay in responding to their September 16 letter requesting registration.
Acting party president, Erias Lukwago, accompanied by top officials, confronted EC’s deputy spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, only to be informed that the top leaders were unavailable.
The delegation’s frustration grew as Bukenya couldn’t provide a clear timeline for when they would be attended to, leaving them no choice but to depart without resolution.
Lukwago expressed his disappointment to journalists, emphasizing the EC’s delay in providing registration forms hinders their party’s formalization. He assured that the faction will reconvene to strategize their next move.
“We arrived this morning, and the receptionists were good to us… We got the shock of our life when Mr. Paul Bukenya came and I think they told us a lie that they had a field activity,” Lukwago recounted.
In response, Bukenya urged the FDC Katonga leadership to await a formal Commission response. “The matter is before the commission, it will consider it and respond,” he stated.
This development follows the EC’s September 4 decision to reject the FDC Katonga party’s name, citing similarities with the People Power Front and color resemblance to the FDC Najjanankumbi faction.
However, the Katonga faction asserts their name and colors are distinct.
The FDC Katonga faction has been working towards establishing their new party, the People’s Front for Freedom, since submitting their application to the Electoral Commission on August 27.
With royal blue and white as their chosen colors and “Freedom for All and All for Freedom” as their slogan, they aim to differentiate themselves from other political groups.
