Kampala, Uganda – In a surprise move, Ketty Lamalo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, has been fired after serving in the position for three years.
Lamalo, who was appointed in July 2021, was seen as a favorite of First Lady Janet Museveni, who is also the Minister of Education.
However, sources indicate that Lamalo’s performance was deemed unsatisfactory, leading to her termination.
Lamalo’s exit has been described as acrimonious, with sources revealing that she failed to meet the high expectations of Janet Museveni.
Despite being a devout Born Again Christian, Lamalo’s tenure was marked by rumors, intrigue, and underperformance, leading to a breakdown in relationships with key Ministry officials.
The situation became so tense that weekly management meetings were often canceled, and the Minister would sometimes decline to speak to Lamalo due to her disappointment with the underperformance.
Donors have also expressed discomfort with the lack of progress on funded projects.
Lamalo’s replacement, Dr. Jane Egau Akol, has been serving as Under Secretary and has over 30 years of experience in the Ministry.
