Kampala, Uganda – Two prominent members of the Democratic Party (DP) have raised several demands ahead of the upcoming delegates’ conference scheduled for May 30.

Richard Lumu, MP for Mityana South and deputy legal advisor of the DP, has joined forces with Richard Ssebamala, a presidential aspirant within the party.

The MPs’ demands aim to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process. Key among their concerns are:

    • Publication of Official Delegate List: The MPs are calling for the publication of the official list of delegates to ensure transparency and accountability.
    • Financial Accountability: They are demanding financial accountability to ensure that party funds are managed prudently.
    • Equal Access to Nomination Documents: The duo is pushing for equal access to nomination documents to level the playing field for all aspirants.
    • Suspension of Vetting Committee: They have also called for the suspension of the vetting committee, likely citing concerns over potential biases or unfair treatment.
    • National Executive Committee Meeting: Lastly, they are demanding a National Executive Committee meeting to ratify election procedures, ensuring that the party’s electoral process is legitimate and widely accepted.

These demands come amidst internal party tensions, following incumbent party president Norbert Mao’s declaration to seek a fourth term.

Many party members have expressed discontent with Mao’s leadership, particularly after he made an agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, which led to his appointment as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

The agreement sparked widespread criticism within the party, with many members feeling that Mao’s actions have compromised the DP’s independence and opposition stance.

Some party members have gone as far as advising Mao to leave the party and work directly with President Museveni, given his close ties with the ruling party.

As the DP navigates these internal challenges, the demands raised by Lumu and Ssebamala highlight the need for transparency, accountability, and fairness in the party’s electoral process.

The upcoming delegates’ conference in Mbarara will be crucial in determining the party’s direction and leadership.
