A light aircraft carrying soldiers of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers has crashed in the Kiunga area of Lamu county.

Two pilots, seven KDF officers, and one police officer were injured during the accident.

A viral video shows the light aircraft engulfed in flames.

Preliminary reports indicate that the plane was ascending from the Kiunga airstrip when it hit electricity poles and crashed, bursting into flames and burning beyond recognition.

The aircraft, which landed on a thicket, had all its wreckage scattered all over the place as firefighters attempted to put out the fire.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital as investigations got underway to establish the cause of the accident.

Elsewhere, a KDF helicopter crashed in Lamu, killing several crew and military personnel.

A statement from the KDF on Tuesday, September 19, indicated that the Kenya Air Force Huey helicopter crashed on Monday night.

The KDF said the crew and military onboard the ill-fated chopper were on air surveillance for the ongoing Operation Amani Boni.

“The leadership and entire KDF fraternity condole with the crew’s families. A board of inquiry has been constituted and dispatched to the scene to establish the cause of the crash,” the statement indicated.

In July 2023, a Kenya Air Force chopper crashed in Chemolingot, Tiaty.

According to a statement released to the public on Thursday, July 20, the chopper crashed after hitting a tree while taking off from Chemolingot Stadium in Baringo.
