Uganda’s Constitutional Court has declared the Computer Misuse (Amendment) Act of 2022 null and void, ruling that it was passed by Parliament in contravention of the Constitution.
The law, which aimed to regulate social media and freedom of expression, had been criticized for stifling online dissent and targeting political opposition.

The Act, tabled by outgoing Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko in the 11th Parliament and signed into law in September 2022, prohibited hateful or misleading information, protected privacy, and introduced penalties for individuals convicted, including disqualification from holding public office.
However, human rights groups and activists argued that it was designed to curtail online dissent and target opposition.
The court’s decision is seen as a significant victory for digital rights and freedom of expression in Uganda, with many Ugandans having been remanded or convicted under the law.
