In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA has been elected as the new pope and leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He has taken the name Pope Leo XIV.
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV is the first American pope in history.
He studied mathematics and philosophy at Villanova University before entering the Order of Saint Augustine.
He was ordained as a priest in 1982 and served in various roles, including prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine and Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru.
As a cardinal, Pope Leo XIV served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He was created cardinal by Pope Francis in September 2023.
Pope Leo XIV’s experience as a missionary in Peru and his work in various Vatican departments will likely shape his approach to global issues and church governance.
As the 267th pope, he will lead the Catholic Church, guiding its direction on various global issues and navigating the complexities of the modern world.
The announcement was made to crowds in St. Peter’s Square, marking the beginning of a new era for the Catholic Church under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV.
His papacy is expected to address pressing concerns, including the church’s growth, social justice, and spiritual guidance.
Pope Leo XIV’s first major public event will be the Sunday Angelus on May 11, delivered from the window of the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace.
