Moscow, Russia – A search and rescue operation is underway in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula after a helicopter carrying 22 people, including 19 tourists and three crew members, lost contact with authorities.

According to Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov, communication with the Mi-8 helicopter was lost at 04:15 GMT on Saturday.

The helicopter had picked up passengers near the Vachkajec ancient volcano, a popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking landscapes and active volcanoes.

The helicopter was headed to the village of Nikolayevka, approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of the pickup point. However, it disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff, with the crew failing to report any issues.

Poor visibility in the area has been cited as a potential factor in the disappearance, according to the local weather service.

This incident comes after a series of fatal accidents involving planes and helicopters in Russia’s far eastern region.

In August 2021, an Mi-8 helicopter crashed into a lake in Kamchatka, killing eight people. Just a month prior, a plane crash claimed the lives of all 28 passengers and crew on board.

An investigation into the latest incident is ongoing, with emergency services and search teams deployed to locate the missing helicopter.
