The Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese, Rev Nason Baluku, has announced a ban on priests attending parties beyond 5pm within the diocese, effective immediately.
The decision was made during the diocesan synod meetings held on July 23 and 24, 2024.
According to Bishop Baluku, the ban is aimed at promoting efficient time management and reducing unnecessary indulgence in social events. He warned that any priest found violating the directive will face disciplinary action.
To enforce the ban, matrimonial services conducted by priests will be limited to one hour, and wedding receptions must conclude by 5pm. Bishop Baluku emphasized that the decision was reached after concerns were raised about widespread poverty and the need for responsible behavior.

Rev. Ven Mannaseh Takwenda, Archdeacon for Maliba Archdeaconry, welcomed the ban but expressed concerns about its enforcement, citing potential exceptions such as inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Ms Grace Kabugho Kimekeke, a Synod delegate, supported the resolution, highlighting the need for young women to prioritize productive work over attending parties.
The South Rwenzori Diocese’s 10-year Strategic Plan, launched in May 2021, emphasizes poverty eradication, economic empowerment, and spiritual growth, aligning with the ban’s objectives.
