The Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election is currently underway, with six candidates vying for the seat left vacant by the late Sarah Nyirabashitsi Matake.

Sultana Salim, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, cast her vote at the Kisoro New Taxi Park polling station, expressing concerns about the harassment of her polling agents by security operatives.

She intends to petition the Electoral Commission, citing an unfree and unfair election process.

Rose Kabagyeni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, voted at Gikoro Primary School polling station.

Voting began smoothly at 8:00 AM, with approximately 80 out of 582 registered voters casting their ballots by 11:00 AM.

Kabagyeni, a former Kisoro District Woman MP, emerged as the winner of the NRM primaries held on October 25, 2024, with 39,941 votes.

Other candidates contesting in the by-election include Musanase Juliet of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party under the Najjanankumbi faction, Aisha Chimpaye of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, an independent candidate, and Mable Ingabire of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party.

The outcome of this by-election will be crucial in determining the representation of Kisoro District in the Ugandan Parliament.
