The upcoming parliamentary by-elections in Kisoro District have taken an interesting turn as two prominent candidates, including former Kisoro District woman Member of Parliament Rose Kabagenyi, have expressed interest and picked nomination forms.
Kabagenyi, now serving as Senior Presidential Advisor on Agriculture in State House, is seeking to reclaim her former seat, which she lost to the late Sarah Mateke in the 2021 elections.
Kabagenyi has pledged to resume development projects left incomplete, focusing on education, road infrastructure, and community empowerment.
“I will begin with the projects Sarah left unfinished, including improvements in education, women empowerment, roads, the Kanyamateke Bridge, and income-generating programs,” she stated.
Leveraging her past experience and deep connection to the community, Kabagenyi aims to bring continuity and drive positive change for the people of Kisoro.
Sylvia Dushime, former Kisoro Municipality speaker and 2021 candidate for the same seat, has also picked nomination forms, making her the second contender.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, outlined the eligibility criteria for candidates.
To contest for the District Woman Representative to Parliament, one must be a female Ugandan aged 18 years and above, an NRM member, and hold verified O-Level and A-Level certificates or equivalents.
Candidates must also pay a non-refundable expression of interest fee of Shs 1,000,000 to the NRM.
