Lwengo District, Uganda – A devastating car crash along the Masaka-Mbarara highway on Saturday has claimed the lives of three family members, leaving their bodies burnt to ashes.
The collision involved a Fuso truck with registration number UBA 414P and a Toyota Mark X with registration number UBP 460P, which exploded into flames after impact.
The deceased have been identified as Collin Kityo, 21, Lauben Mwine, 27, and Vincent Lubega, 35, all from Sembabule and Bukomansimbi districts.
One occupant of the Toyota Mark X survived but their particulars are yet to be released.
The truck’s occupants, three brothers, sustained injuries in the crash.
They are:
- Mahadi Kizito, 41, driver of the Fuso truck
- Saad Kizito, 32
- Wahab Kizito, 21
Eyewitnesses attribute the crash to speeding by the Toyota Mark X driver.
The victims were en route to Masaka City for a night out before attending an introduction ceremony the following day.
Southern Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident and urged motorists to avoid distractions while driving. The traffic department is investigating the cause of the crash.
This tragedy contributes to the rising number of fatal crashes in Uganda, with a 30% increase in 2023, according to the Police Annual Crime Report.
