JUST IN: MPs PAUL AKAMBA, MICHAEL MAWANDA GRANTED BAIL

Kampala, Uganda – Igara East Member of Parliament Michael Mawanda, Busiki MP Paul Akamba, and city lawyer Julius Kirya Taitankoko have been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court.

The three, accused of defrauding the government of Shs3.4 billion intended for Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society Ltd as compensation for property lost during the war, were released on a cash bail of Shs35 million each.

Judge Jane Okuo Kajuga ordered the defendants to deposit their passports with the court and barred them from leaving the country without permission.

Each of their sureties was bonded Shs50 million non-cash.

The state attorney had expressed concerns that the accused would interfere with police investigations, but Judge Kajuga noted that since investigations are complete, their trial will commence soon.

The defendants have been on remand for over two months.
