NWSC CUTS OFF WATER SUPPLY TO LUZIRA PRISON OVER DEBT

By Sekaggya Seka Moses

Kampala, Uganda – The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has disconnected water services to Luzira Prison Complex due to outstanding water bills totaling Shs18,272,450,274.

According to Frank Baine, Senior Commissioner of Prisons, the disconnection occurred on August 13, 2024, despite the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development releasing Shs7,996,253,000, which has already been remitted to NWSC.

“This situation is a matter of national concern,” Baine said, adding that the Uganda Prisons Service is currently utilizing water bowsers to mitigate the water crisis.

Negotiations are underway between the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda Prisons Service, and National Water and Sewerage Corporation to restore the water situation to normal.
