Kampala – Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has defended his role in holding the government accountable, amidst criticism from some concerned citizens who accused him of merely lamenting instead of taking action.
Ssenyonyi’s response came after a court verdict cleared four parliamentary commissioners, including former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, of wrongdoing in a 1.7 billion shillings service award.
Sengo Bob criticized Ssenyonyi, saying: “Why didn’t you go to court and challenge this service award of 1.7B than blaming others who did? Talking too much without evidence and action is always wrong. You have made the leadership of NUP look like they don’t know what they are doing. I prophesize Hon Mpuuga will take NUP leadership to court if they don’t apologize.”
John Kalemba added: “Dear LoP with due respect, the recent court verdict may have left your camp halfway naked, as the country was watching every formal and verbal utterance that was splashing from your party targeting your very own senior counsel. We had much respect for you as a senior media personality who also possesses double professions you have obtained to lead the fellow opposition members as a giraffe in the jungle. However, we are looking forward to seeing you come up with a substantial formal statement after verdict.”
Mulondo Mudathir said: “Hon. Senyonyi I have confidence in you as a lawyer, take matters to court of appeal, otherwise we can’t go to streets over this when we have fresh legal brains like you. May you also push other cases like the Lubowa hospital saga!”
Ronnie Kasozi added: “But you can appeal against the verdict of the trial judge…you’re an advocate, you know the procedure….we can’t keep on lamenting on the same issue as if it’s the end of everything as far as the struggle is concerned…”

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi remains adamant that the 1.7 billion shillings service award was a corrupt act, despite the court’s verdict.
Speaking to the media today, Ssenyonyi reiterated his stance, saying: “My role as the Leader of Opposition is to keep the government in check. So what some people call lamenting is us keeping the government in check.”
National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, echoed Ssenyonyi’s sentiments, stating: “Talk of thieves defending their fellow thieves. Ugandans must realize that they are on their own!”
