FATAL FUEL TANK ACCIDENT IN RUKUNGIRI CLAIMS LIFE, LEAVES TWO INJURED

Rukungiri, Uganda – A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Bagahwe trading centre in Rukungiri district, resulting in the death of a fuel station manager and severe injuries to two others.

The manager, identified as 32 year-old Abdullah Harman, a Somali national, was burnt beyond recognition. Harman was the manager of the Stabex Fuel Station located in Kihihi.

The incident involved a fuel tank that lost control, fell into a ditch, and caught fire, claiming the life of 32-year-old Abdullah Harman, a Somali national and manager of the Stabex Fuel Station in Kihihi.

The fuel tank, a Mitsubishi Fuso, was transporting fuel from Mbarara city to the Stabex branch in Kihihi when the driver, Qurash Mayengo, 35, lost control of the vehicle while descending a steep slope near a roundabout at Bagahwe.

The vehicle was traveling at a high speed when it struck a signpost and fell into a ditch, igniting the fuel. Mayengo and the turn man, 27-year-old Brian Kiprimo, a Kenyan national, suffered severe burns and were taken to Nyakibale Hospital before being referred to Mulago Hospital for further treatment.

The accident caused significant traffic disruption along the Rukungiri-Kihihi road as emergency services worked to control the fire and clear the wreckage.

Police attributed the cause to reckless driving and urged drivers to exercise caution to prevent such accidents.

Harman’s remains were taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
